Theoretically Awesome’s Icon

A quick note about Theoretically Awesome’s icon. The icon embraces the (eventual) monochromatic design of the website with the stark contrast of the black letters with negative space forming this site’s initials. The letters themselves are from Wim Crouwel’s theoretical font from the 60’s, New Alphabet.

The New Alphabet font was created out of necessity in the bourgeoning digital age. With primitive dot matrix printers opening a brave new world for typography, Crouwel envisioned a font that was a relation of straight, lines confined to 45 and 90 degree angles. The beauty of it lies in the absurdity of it – out of context, the characters are illegible without prior knowledge. But in the absurdity lies a simplicity that really appeals to me and the theme of this website. Hence, it will find itself at the end of every article to remind you of the simple absurdity of this site. This Logo is made of 100% Win and Awesome, and 42% Post-Consumer Recycled Material
